Holi Beyond Colours

What comes to your mind when you listen to the word – “Holi”? Colours. Combustion. Sweets. Cannabis.

But have you ever thought of words like purity, faith and truth ? Let’s be honest. You never think of it in this way. Holi has always been a festival of colours and sweets. But it’s a lot more than that. On this Holi, let’s understand Holi.

Holi always comes after Shivratri. Lord Shiva came to bless the mortals with the light of wisdom because people were filled with vices like greed, anger, ego etc. Then comes Holi which symbolises burning of negative traits and awakening of purity, basically the transformation of our souls. The fire of Holi dahan again represents the divine power that burns away the filth. The next day after Holika dahan, we celebrate with colours. Let’s break the significance of these colours down.

The colour of joy: RED. As we smile or blush, our cheeks turn red. As we laugh, our cheeks turn red. Red is the colour of joy.

The colour of serenity: BLUE. The colour blue teaches us to be calm and serene like water.

The colour of faith: YELLOW. It always reminds me of Lord Ganesha. This colour tells us to keep our faith alive even in difficult times.

The colour of growth: GREEN. This colour always tells me that growth is certain. We just need to connect with ourselves and discover our purpose.

Now that you have understood Holi in your own language i.e. colours, I request all of you to burn the vices in the fire of purity and spread the colours of the virtues. Every Indian festival is not just a festival, there lies a powerful message for humankind. Just get a little curious and you’ll get the right message. So this year, celebrate Holi in your true spirit, make your life colorful and fill others’ lives with more vibrant colours.
