10 Ways to Spend Time Alone

People often crave others’ company. They feel they need someone to spend time with, to live life, to have fun, and for almost everything else. But did you know that you can have the most enjoyable time with yourself? You don’t need anyone else. You are enough.

There are countless ways to spend time alone, but today I’m sharing my top ten favourites. I truly enjoy my own company, and that allows me to explore more and more about myself.

So here are my top ten ways to spend time alone:

1. Go for a walk

This tops the list because it has added benefits: fresh air and movement. Do this without your phone. Just walk in nature, observe your surroundings, hear the birds chirping, and listen to the rustling leaves. When you walk this way, without headphones, you reconnect with your original home—nature. Humans may be highly evolved now, but we should never forget that we once lived in forests in the Stone Age.

2. Cook a new dish

Didn’t we all become master chefs during COVID? Ever wondered why? Because we had ample time. This shows that most of us love experimenting with food—if we have free time. But here’s the truth: you will never “have” time. You must make time.

3. Organise your room

A clean space boosts positivity and productivity—no brainer. When you declutter, you automatically show signs of being organised in other areas of life too.

4. Unplug

Try this right now. Switch off your phone, laptop, and other gadgets. Be present in the moment. Breathe and simply experience your own company in silence.

5. Create a budget

A highly effective use of alone time. It helps you manage your finances and gives you a real-time picture of your spending so you can plan better.

6. Browse your favourite website

There’s probably content you’ve been meaning to read or watch for months, but it’s stuck in your tabs. Next time you feel bored, pick one and finally go through it.

7. Write a creative story

We are all creative—we just don’t realise it. Think outside the box and write a story. You don’t have to be a writer; you can even jot down bullet points. You might surprise yourself. Who knows—your story could be the next Macbeth.

8. Create a playlist

This one is fun. Make a custom playlist and organise it by mood or occasion. It comes in handy whenever you want to vibe.

9. Video-call someone

There’s probably someone you’ve been meaning to call for a long time. Instead of a voice call, try a video call. It will uplift both of you in ways you may not expect. It’s also a great way to quickly turn lonely time into meaningful connection.

10. Go to a café

Who says you need company to enjoy tea or coffee? Sit at your favourite café by yourself. It can be surprisingly enjoyable to sip your drink and observe the world around you.

Which one are you going to try first? Or do you have a different way to enjoy your alone time? Comment and let me know.
