Can Money Buy Happiness?

The answer is, of course, subjective. It depends on your definition of happiness.

For some people, happiness lies in material possessions. They love getting things they want because it gives them a sense of satisfaction. But that happiness is often temporary. Have you ever noticed that when you buy a new item—let’s say a phone—your excitement is at its peak in the beginning? Gradually, it fades away and eventually disappears. This happens because the brain quickly adapts to new possessions. What once felt exciting becomes normal, and soon you start looking for the next thing that might make you happy.

This is a form of happiness that money can buy.

However, not all happiness comes from owning things. Sometimes, happiness comes from experiences, relationships, personal growth, and doing what you love. When you stop depending entirely on material possessions for happiness, you begin to appreciate the small things in life. You find joy within yourself. You discover happiness in pursuing hobbies, learning new skills, spending time with loved ones, or simply being at peace.

This is the kind of happiness that money cannot directly buy.

But in a way, money can still play a role.

Let’s understand this with an example. Suppose you love painting, but you don’t have the necessary tools. You invest in an easel, canvas, colours, brushes, and other supplies. With those resources, you are able to enjoy your hobby more and perhaps even create a masterpiece. The happiness comes from painting, but money helped make that experience possible.

The same applies to many aspects of life. Money may not buy happiness itself, but it can buy comfort, security, education, healthcare, and opportunities. It can remove certain worries and create conditions that make happiness easier to achieve.

So, the question remains debatable.

What isn’t debatable is your understanding of happiness and how you choose to use your money. When both are in sync, you are more likely to find lasting happiness.
