Stress Or Calm? — A Keyboard Story
The world is all about perspective. We often believe that happiness depends on how much we earn, where we live, or what we own. But sometimes, the difference between stress and calm lies in something much simpler. Let me explain with a short story.
John was a pessimist. He lived a monotonous life and often felt trapped in a cycle of responsibilities. Every morning, he woke up with a heavy heart, rushed through his routine, and spent countless hours on his keyboard. He disliked every minute of it, yet he convinced himself that he had no choice.
From the outside, his life looked perfectly fine. He had a beautiful family, a decent house, supportive friends, and everything that most people would consider a blessing. Yet something always felt missing. There was a constant sense of dissatisfaction that followed him wherever he went.
One day, during a casual conversation, someone asked him a simple question:
“Do you enjoy your work?”
The question caught him off guard.
He had never really thought about it. He was so busy surviving each day that he had forgotten to ask himself whether he actually enjoyed the way he spent most of his time. The reality hit him hard. He suddenly realized that the activity occupying a major portion of his life was something he neither loved nor looked forward to.
On the other hand, there was Shawn.
Shawn was a hardcore optimist. He was the kind of person who always found a reason to smile. He saw possibilities where others saw problems and considered every day a fresh opportunity.
Interestingly, Shawn also spent hours on his keyboard.
In fact, he spent just as much time on it as John did.
Yet their experiences couldn’t have been more different.
Shawn came from a middle-class background and had his own share of struggles. Life wasn’t always easy for him. There were bills to pay, responsibilities to manage, and challenges to overcome. But despite all that, he rarely complained.
Whenever he sat in front of his keyboard, time seemed to fly. Hours would pass without him noticing. The activity energized him rather than drained him. It gave him a sense of purpose, peace, and joy. Even after a long day, he walked away feeling fulfilled instead of exhausted.
Now here’s the interesting part.
Two men.
Both spending hours on a keyboard.
One feels hopeless and stressed.
The other feels joyful and calm.
What makes the difference?
At first glance, you might assume that their keyboards are the same.
But they aren’t.
John’s keyboard belongs to his laptop.
Shawn’s keyboard belongs to his piano.
Suddenly, the story takes on a completely different meaning.
For John, the keyboard symbolizes pressure, deadlines, meetings, and work that no longer excites him. He is so consumed by obligations that he has forgotten to truly live.
For Shawn, the keyboard represents passion. It is a source of creativity and self-expression. It may not make him rich, but it enriches his life in ways money cannot measure.
The fascinating thing is that the word keyboard remains exactly the same. Yet one creates stress while the other creates calm.
That is the power of perspective.
Of course, not all of us can quit our jobs and spend our days doing only what we love. Life doesn’t work that way. Responsibilities are real, and bills need to be paid. But perhaps the lesson is to make room for something that brings us alive. A hobby, a passion, a creative pursuit, or even a small daily ritual that makes us smile.
When we find joy in the little things, life feels lighter.
The moral of the story is simple: happiness is not always about having more. Sometimes it is about discovering what makes your heart feel at home and giving it a place in your life. When you are happy from within and learn to appreciate small joys, many of the superficial things that once seemed important begin to lose their power.
After all, the same word “keyboard” can hold two completely different worlds.
